Epic run 2013

Well 2013 will be the third year my best friend Steve and I have done our "epic run." With each passing year it gets more and more grand and epic.

2011 we had originally planned a run where we would start at Smith and Morehouse in the mighty Uinta Mountains here in Utah and finish on the summit of Bald Mountain. This run however, had to be put on hold due to record breaking snowfall received during the previous winter.

Steve and I had to improvise and came up with a grand idea on an epic run we could attempt and not have to deal with several feet of snow. We finally decided on the mighty Ben Lomond Peak in the north end of Weber County Utah.

The run was really amazing and this was my first introduction to trail running as I had only recently started running and had been experiencing many firsts in the running department. However, the same problem plagued us on Ben Lomond as we would have experienced in the Uinta's, snow, and LOTS of it!

After plugging through miles and miles of snow banks, we decided it would be best to cut our losses and return back to the car as we had a limited supply of food, water and Gatorade to keep our bodies properly nourished. All in all, we had an amazing trip and am excited when we can return to this mighty mountain and finally conquer its majestic beauty.

2012, was the year the weather finally cooperated enough to allow to run our original epic run, from Bald Mountain to trial lake. We had been planning this run for two years and were finally standing at the base of Bald Mountain. The excitement was nearly impossible to contain and we were like little kids on Christmas morning.

We decided to start at Bald Mountain for this adventure as we were not sure we could summit this mighty mountain after running many miles of trails and climbing thousands of vertical feet in the process.

The scenery from on top of the mountain was amazing. It truly felt we were standing on top of the world. We spent a fair amount of time getting pictures and videos of the amazing view. After awhile we decided it was time to move  on and started our descent down the mountain.

After taking a quick stop at the base again, we started working our way towards Notch Mountain via the Notch Mountain trail. The scenery on this trail is mind blowing. Few sights are more picturesque than the beauty that trail holds.

After a few hours we finally reached the summit of Notch Mountain and worked our way to where we were planing on stopping, Trial Lake. Few experiences have been more gratifying in my life than running this amazing piece of wilderness and being able to enjoy it's beauty.

After experiencing two very amazing "epic runs," it is time for a third and most epic run yet. What is this mighty run you say? Well we are planning on running to and up the tallest point in all of Utah, Kings peak and back.

This epic run will take us roughly 26 miles and challenge us like never before. Our fitness levels are going to have to be at their peak to perform such a task. The reward though will be absolutely amazing, I am certain of that! Now we just need the weather to start cooperating, so we can actually summit Kings Peak this year without snow issues.

    1. Thanks Cory, I just wish the weather was as good up North as it is in your neck of the woods. I am going through trail withdrawals really bad at the moment. COngrats on the 100 mile week by the way, VERY impressive! I have never come anywhere near that.

  2. Everyday as I train I spend at some portion of the run thinking about running King's with you. I can't wait but at the same time as a struggle with a 1,000 foot gain over a mile I try to think about 10,000' over 13 and I quickly feel humbled and I really dig in and try to get as much from the hills as possible so I will be somewhat prepared for what will surely be an epic run! Who knows? If we are feeling up to it we might even go for the triple crow and Nail Gilbert's and South King's at the same go! I can't wait to run this mountain with you!

    1. Agreed, this run is going to be flipping awesome, and if we are feeling up to it, we are definitely going to hit all three peaks for sure. I quickly realized yesterday, I have a lot of work to do to get in the condition to be able to run this puppy with minimal problems.
